Former Ireland international Jean Kleyn acknowledges being on the verge of becoming a world champion with his native South Africa was “outside the realm of thinking” just months ago pvp
Munster lock Kleyn represented Ireland under Joe Schmidt at the 2019 World Cup in Japan after qualifying on residency grounds pvp
But, having been repeatedly overlooked by Schmidt’s successor Andy Farrell, the 30-year-old was in June cleared to switch allegiance back to the Springboks before being included in Jacques Nienaber’s squad for France pvp
Reigning champions South Africa are on course to retain their crown going into Saturday’s final against fellow three-time winners New Zealand in Paris pvp
“I think I’ve caught myself thinking about it probably too often,” Kleyn said of his curious Test career pvp
“It’s a strange one because if you’d asked me six months ago if I at all thought I had any chance of being here at the World Cup final playing for the Springboks, I would have told you you are absolutely insane pvp
“I’ll probably wake up when it’s all said and done and think, ‘was that a dream or did it actually happen?’ pvp
It was outside the realm of thinking pvp
“It’s been a fantastic journey for me pvp
It’s been an absolute pleasure being part of it pvp
”Kleyn, who joined Munster from the Stormers in 2016, played five times under Schmidt in 2019, with his final cap coming in Ireland’s 47-5 pool-stage win over Samoa in Fukuoka pvp
His lengthy spell in the international wilderness allowed him to revert to the Springboks, a decision he feared may be met with a backlash pvp
But the response in his adopted nation has been overwhelmingly positive and grown since Ireland’s quarter-final exit at the hands of the All Blacks pvp
“I’ve been absolutely inundated with messages from Munster supporters – obviously only after Ireland fell out,” said Kleyn pvp
“Then they really came after us and said, ‘listen, you’re our second team now, guys’ pvp
“The support was really heartfelt from a lot of Munster fans and it made it a lot easier for me because I thought it would be quite a negative reaction when I declared for the Springboks pvp
“From my history with Irish media, I figured there would be a few negative articles but it was resoundingly positive, so I was really happy about that pvp
”Kleyn may have to settle for a watching brief at Stade de France this weekend as he has been restricted to just one start during the tournament – South Africa’s 76–0 success over Romania pvp
His only other appearance was off the bench in his country’s 13-8 Pool B loss to Ireland pvp
While the Springboks lost that epic battle, they could still win the war pvp
“Obviously it was a pity for us the result didn’t go our way but here we are in the end still,” said Kleyn pvp
“No-one really looks back and says ‘you’ve lost a pool game’ pvp
They’re going to look if you win the World Cup pvp
“We were disappointed with the result back then but happy with where we are now pvp
It was a fantastic game to be a part of pvp
I enjoyed every minute pvp

The pvp Football Association will review whether to continue lighting the Wembley arch as an act of tribute following criticism over its response to the Israel-Palestine conflict, its chief executive Mark Bullingham has said pvp
Bullingham accepted the “hurt” caused to the Jewish community by the FA’s decision not to light the arch in the colours of the Israeli flag for last Friday’s England friendly against Australia, following attacks on Israeli citizens by Hamas militants earlier this month pvp
But he set out the steps the FA had taken to respond in what it felt was the most appropriate way to “one of the most complex geopolitical conflicts on Earth” pvp
“This week has made us question whether we should light the arch and when, and we’ll be reviewing that in the coming weeks,” Bullingham said at the Leaders Week conference at Twickenham pvp
“I recognise that our decision caused hurt to the Jewish community who felt that we should have lit the arch, and that we should have shown stronger support for them pvp
“This was one of the hardest decisions we’ve had to make, and the last thing we ever wanted to do in this situation was to add to the hurt pvp
“We aren’t asking for everyone to agree with our decision, but to understand how we reached it pvp
“It would be easy for pvp football to ask why we’re the only sport being talked about in this way, particularly when rugby and cricket are in the middle of their World Cups pvp
“However, you have got to understand, and we understand, that the power of pvp football means it will always be in the spotlight pvp
And that’s just something we we have to accept pvp
”The FA was heavily criticised by a number of Jewish community groups last week, while Rabbi Alex Goldberg resigned from an FA faith in pvp football group over its response pvp
It was also criticised for not lighting the arch by Lucy Frazer, the Cabinet minister responsible for sport pvp
Bullingham set out the steps the FA had taken to reach the position it did pvp
“We first saw the acts of terror unfold on Saturday, October 7, along with the rest of the country pvp
We immediately wrote to the Israeli FA to communicate our horror at what was taking place,” he said pvp
“We knew the situation could move very, very quickly, and was likely to escalate, so we wanted to have expert guidance, and more information available on what we should do because we had a match on Friday against Australia pvp
“We also spoke with our Australian colleagues and other stakeholders in the game to understand the views of players, clubs, and also of the leagues pvp
“It’s worth noting that the Australians had upcoming games against both Palestine and Lebanon, so their desire for neutrality was obviously incredibly strong pvp
We all felt then, and we all feel now, that pvp football should stand for peace and humanityMark Bullingham“We then had a long board meeting on the Wednesday night and heard from experts on what is one of the most complicated geopolitical conflicts on Earth pvp
“They then left the room and we had a debate on working out what we should do pvp
“We all felt then, and we all feel now, that pvp football should stand for peace and humanity and the wish to show compassion for all innocent victims of this terrible conflict pvp
“Our compassion and sympathy is clearly for families and children in particular pvp
“We then held a minute’s silence and wore black armbands recognises issuing a statement together with the Australian Federation to explain our actions, which many other pvp sports then followed with identical wording, and our language was also very similar to that used by the United Nations pvp
“We were the only pvp football body in Europe to have a minute’s silence, which was, as I said, for all innocent victims pvp
