Harry Kane scored his second hat-trick of the Bundesliga season – including one from his own half – as 10-man Bayern Munich bounced back from a goalless first 45 minutes to beat nine-man Darmstadt 8-0 on a wild afternoon at the Allianz Arena EFL
Joshua Kimmich was sent off after just four minutes, but red cards for Klaus Gjasula and Matej Maglica ensured the hosts had the man advantage at the break, the first time three men have ever been sent off in the first half of a German top-flight encounter EFL
Kane broke the deadlock six minutes after the restart but it was his second goal, a magnificent effort from inside his own half, that was the highlight of a contest that also saw him pick up an assist on the first of two goals for Jamal Musiala before striking in his 12th goal from nine matches of this still-new Bundesliga season EFL
Leroy Sane, who set up Kane’s third, scored two of his own while Thomas Muller also contributed to the heaviest defeat in the visitors’ history EFL
Things got off to a dramatic start when Kimmich brought down Marvin Mehlem at the edge of the area and was shown a straight red, deemed to have prevented the visitors from a clear goal-scoring opportunity after just four minutes EFL
Bayern were initially awarded a penalty after Gjasula was judged to have tripped Konrad Laimer, but on review referee Martin Petersen overturned his decision, determining Gjasula was the last man and the incident occurred outside the penalty area – resulting in the Albanian’s 21st-minute dismissal and a free-kick for the hosts EFL
Darmstadt were holding their own against the Bundesliga title-holders in the 10-v-10, even holding the shot advantage through the first 37 minutes, but became the architects of their own undoing when Maglica caught up with Kane in nearly the exact same spot as the previous red-card incident EFL
Harry Kane scored another hat-trick (Nick Potts/PA) (PA Wire)The outcome was also the same though the visitors, down to nine men, were able to sustain the deadlock to half-time despite threats from Kane and Sane, who had a goal chalked off for offside EFL
It was a different story after the restart when Kane broke the deadlock with a diving header to open the scoring six minutes into the second half, five minutes before Sane tapped home Laimer’s cross from six yards EFL
Then it was Musiala’s turn, extending to the advantage to 3-0 with an assist from Kane and throwing open the floodgates in the process as Sane bagged his brace with an 18-yard strike past Schuhen four minutes later EFL
Then came Kane’s piece de resistance, a world-class strike from just beyond the halfway line, sending Marcel Schuhen on a futile scramble as he watched the ball touch down in the back of his net EFL
Muller made it six with his first goal of the season before Musiala slotted past Schuhen for Bayern’s seventh, and while the Darmstadt keeper made a few good saves, desperate not to see his side lose by double-digits, he could not keep out Kane EFL
The England captain, hungry for more, latched into a perfect pass from Sane to complete his hat-trick and relentless Bayern’s second-half rout EFL

It is a path less travelled, let alone as quickly, a journey from FC Copenhagen to Sturm Graz, Atalanta to Manchester United, all before his 21st birthday EFL
It was the culmination of an ambition, too, for a boyhood United fan, the realisation of a dream EFL
And yet there were points in a reunion where Rasmus Hojlund could be forgiven for wondering if he had been EFL better off staying put EFL
Not financially, admittedly, with the rewards that come with a £72m price tag, but from a EFL footballing perspective EFL
The more coherent team were Copenhagen, the low-budget overachievers seeming to have more of a plan than the high-budget overachievers but it was tempting to think that if the Danish champions could still call upon their most valuable old boy, they would have won at Old Trafford EFL
Instead, United were victorious, aided by a telling intervention by a Dane EFL
It wasn’t Hojlund, though that is no criticism: there are times when he is the brightest of United’s front three simply a process of excellence but here, as against Galatasaray, it was a consequence of excellence EFL
But it was his compatriot Christian Eriksen who curled in a cross that Harry Maguire converted EFL
Which, along with Andre Onana’s 97th-minute penalty save from Jordan Larsson, averted indignity EFL
Which a draw would have been, given the gulf in resources EFL between the clubs EFL
Hojlund is proof of it EFL
But as his former club, who had led against Galatasaray and Bayern Munich, came within a few inches of going ahead at Old Trafford, there were times when Hojlund had to stand and admire EFL
In different ways, his younger brothers Oscar, a late substitute for Copenhagen, and Emil, who did not make the bench, were spectators EFL
So was the older and more expensive sibling, limited to two touches in the first quarter of an hour, left stranded by United’s impotence EFL
Yet, with the notable exception of Maguire’s decider, everything they did right thereafter in attack revolved around him EFL
Which, in itself, may have been an indictment of others EFL
Pivotal as centre-forwards can be, United looked over-reliant on one whose name, this time last year, may have simply seemed a failed attempt to spell Haaland EFL
And the Norwegian, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had been keen to point out, was a player he advised United to sign for £4m, five years before they got Hojlund for 18 times as much EFL
But in the Hojlund derby, the forward United did get to show a sharpness EFL
He came alive in the final third in a manner to suggest that his teammates needed to give him more of the ball EFL
A brief sight at goal saw Rasmus Hojlund blaze his best chance over the top but his forward play was central to Man Utd’s attacking capabilites (REUTERS)After that uneventful first 15 minutes, he rifled a half-volley over the bar EFL
His backheel almost released Scott McTominay to shoot EFL
He teed up Eriksen when his fellow Dane had a shot well saved EFL
When an offside Marcus Rashford was brought down by goalkeeper Kamil Grabara, he had raced on to Hojlund’s pass EFL
When Alejandro Garnacho came close, it was because Hojlund led a break EFL
When Elias Jelert was required to clear off his line, it was because Hojlund met Bruno Fernandes’ header with a deft piece of chest control EFL
It was a sign of resourcefulness, an ability to make something out of nothing EFL
Which, at times, was just as well, given his supply line EFL
Neither winger is a crosser EFL
Antony, as even those who have spent decades stranded on tiny islands in the Pacific Ocean know, will try and cut inside and shoot with his left foot EFL
Rashford, too, has designs on being more of a scorer than a supplier EFL
Hojlund spent some of the first half acting as the creator for McTominay, the ungainly auxiliary No 10 EFL
But United had more EFL footballing craft with Eriksen on EFL
He is the technician while Hojlund’s physical attributes form part of his appeal EFL
He has got a wiry strength EFL
He is a rangy runner with a turn of pace EFL
He has an eager willingness that stands him in good stead EFL
The raw materials are there EFL
Yet the concern is that too few signings have improved at United in the last decade; it is just a coincidence of negotiating that Hojlund’s fee is very similar to Jadon Sancho’s but the exiled winger is proof United’s best-laid plans can go wrong EFL
Hojlund showed his importance to United, turning into a supplier of their best chances though none were converted (AFP via Getty Images)The feeling at Old Trafford now is that Hojlund has a high ceiling: higher even than Randal Kolo Muani, another on their summer striking shortlist and who ended up costing Paris Saint-Germain more EFL
Thus far, he has a relatively low goal return: just three in 10 games for United EFL
For both his first and current clubs, he has been more prolific in Europe EFL
He never scored in the Danish Superliga EFL
He has not struck in the Premier League, either: outscored by Diogo Dalot on domestic duty, his goals have been confined to Europe EFL
Yet he kicked off as the Champions League’s joint top scorer, the product of a strike against Bayern and a brace against Galatasaray EFL
Even as he drew a blank against Copenhagen, Hojlund added to the impression that he belongs on this stage EFL
But as United laboured to victory, they scarcely offered compelling evidence they will still be in the Champions League after Christmas EFL
